San Giovani Cathedral

The Papal Archbasilica of St. John in Lateran (Italian: Arcibasilica Papale di San Giovanni in Laterano), commonly known as St. John Lateran Archbasilica, St. John Lateran Basilica, St. John Lateran, or simply the Lateran Basilica, is the cathedral church of Rome, Italy and therefore houses the cathedra, or ecclesiastical seat, of the Roman Pontiff (Pope).

It is the oldest of and has precedence among the four papal major basilicas, all of which are in Rome, because it is the oldest church in the West and houses the cathedra of the Roman Pontiff. It has the title of ecumenical mother church of the Roman Catholic faithful.

The Colosseum

The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre  or Colosseo , is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72, and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin for its association with their family name (Flavius).

Monti

Monti is central Rome's secret urban village. Tourists dutifully tick off the Colosseum, the Quirinal hill, the imposing Santa Maria Maggiore basilica, but tend to ignore what lies between them, assuming "there's nothing to see" – and so missing out on one of the city's most charming old residential neighbourhoods.

Piazza della Madonna dei Monti is one big open-air bar these days. If it's authenticity you're after, head for Ai Tre Scalini at Via Panisperna 251, a bottiglieria that has changed little since it opened in 1895. Regulars spill out of the ivy-draped doorway and chat over glasses of Italian craft beer or new-style Frascati wine.

Villa Celimontana

Perhaps it is because of its location, surrounded by some of Rome’s top attractions (the Colosseum, the Forum, Circus Maximus), but the area around the Celio Park is a frequently overlooked part of Rome.

Today the park is the site of several music festivals and the villa is the home of the Italian Geographic Society. The Celio Park area offers both impressive history and a cool shaded respite from Rome’s crowds, but the most simple reason to visit is to enjoy a stroll and picnic in the gardens in the glorious springtime weather.
